Custom Sign Center is seeking an experienced, hands-on Shipping & Crating Working Lead to coordinate daily shipping and crating activities while actively working alongside the department. This role builds custom wood crates and pallets, prepares shipping documents and labels, operates forklifts, and safely loads trucks and trailers.
Job Responsibilities
- Review daily and weekly shipping schedules, establish department priorities, assign work, and provide direction, training, and support to the team.
- Coordinate with production, project management, installation, and other departments when products, hardware, or paperwork are missing; stage completed products by shipping priority.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for crating, packaging, labeling, loading, and shipping verification.
- Review work orders, drawings, measurements, and finished products to determine the proper crate or pallet design.
- Measure, cut, and assemble custom wood crates and pallets; select appropriate blocking, bracing, padding, wrapping, banding, and securement methods.
- Inspect finished products before packaging; protect finished surfaces and ensure loose parts, hardware, and accessories are included and secured.
- Prepare and verify bills of lading, packing slips, shipping labels, crate labels, and UPS and FedEx labels.
- Verify shipment details, document missing or backordered items, maintain organized records, and promptly report damage, shortages, or carrier concerns.
- Safely load and unload company trucks, dry-van and flatbed trailers, and carrier vehicles using sound weight distribution, product orientation, blocking, bracing, and securement practices.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, dollies, straps, chains, and other material-handling equipment; complete daily forklift inspections.
- Maintain clear staging areas, aisles, loading docks, and access to overhead doors while assisting drivers with locating, staging, and securing loads.
Minimum Requirements
- At least three years of experience in shipping, industrial packaging, custom crating, woodworking, warehousing, manufacturing, or a related position preferred.
- Previous lead-person or supervisory experience preferred, with the ability to train employees and address performance concerns professionally.
- Strong custom woodworking, crate-building, or pallet-building ability; able to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, saws, pneumatic nail guns, screw guns, drills, sanders, packaging equipment, and measuring tools.
- Ability to accurately read a tape measure and work from drawings, dimensions, work orders, or verbal instructions.
- Experience preparing bills of lading, packing slips, freight labels, UPS labels, and FedEx labels; basic computer and data-entry skills.
- Previous forklift experience; certification is preferred, or the ability to complete company forklift certification.
- Ability to organize multiple shipments with different deadlines, work independently, and maintain dependable attendance, including overtime when required.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently, team-lift or mechanically handle oversized products, and work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness to wear required PPE and follow all company safety procedures and equipment lockout requirements.
Compensation / Benefits
- Full-time, hourly position in Shipping, Crating & Final Assembly.
- Monday-Friday schedule, with overtime, early starts, and occasional Saturdays as production and shipping schedules require.
- Reports to the Plant Manager.
